CEDAR FALLS — The Guy W. Iversen AMVETS Post 49 has scheduled its annual Memorial Day weekend activities.
Festivities begin with setting up the AMVETS Flag Park, at 1934 Irving Street, with more than 260 American flags representing departed veterans. Members of the various AMVET organizations generally perform this activity on the Friday prior to Memorial Day, starting at 4:30 pm. Non-veterans who are interested in helping are encouraged to join.
Ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. May 27 with the Sunset Program at Veterans Park, located at East 14th Street and Waterloo Road. Activities are brief and consist of the laying of a wreath, the firing of three volleys and the playing of “Taps,” to honor veterans who have died in the past year.
Activities on May 28 at the AMVETS Post 49 include a 10:30 a.m. presentation of patriotic music by a unit of the Cedar Falls Municipal Band. Following the concert will be the setting of memorial bouquets honoring each of the five branches of the armed forces, followed by an address by the director of Veteran Affairs for Black Hawk County, Kevin Dill.
Organizers suggest those attending the Memorial Day program bring their own lawn chairs.
